Due to Torture: Death of a Gaza Prisoner in Israeli Prisons

19/12/2024 - Rai Al-Youm

A Palestinian prisoner from the Gaza Strip has died in Israeli occupation prisons as a result of torture, amid escalating assaults and crimes against Palestinian detainees and ongoing enforced disappearances of Gaza prisoners.

Family sources reported that the International Committee of the Red Cross informed them of the death of prisoner Mohammad Anwar Labad, from Jabalia Refugee Camp in northern Gaza, inside Israeli prisons.

Just days earlier, the Palestinian Prisoners' Affairs Authority and the Palestinian Prisoners Club announced the death of another prisoner, Alaa Marwan Hamza Al-Mahlawi, aged 42, from Gaza City.

It is noteworthy that the occupation detains Gaza prisoners in the majority of its prisons and camps, with the main detention centers being the Negev Prison, Ofer Prison, and Ofer Military Camp, in addition to other camps, notably Sdeh Teiman Camp, which has become synonymous with documented torture crimes. These crimes, originally recorded in Sdeh Teiman, have also been reported in various other prisons.

According to prisoner advocacy organizations, since October 7, at least 49 Palestinian prisoners have died in Israeli custody, with their identities disclosed. Among them, 30 were detainees from Gaza. Additionally, many Gaza prisoners who have died in Israeli prisons and camps remain unidentified, with the occupation withholding information about their identities and the circumstances of their deaths.
