Prisoners' Club: Risks to the Fate of Dr. Husam Abu Safiya Double as Occupation Army Denies Records of His Arrest
January 2, 2025 - Palestinian Prisoners' Club
The Palestinian Prisoners' Club stated that the risks to Dr. Husam Abu Safiya’s fate are increasing as time passes, especially after the Israeli occupation army denied having any record of his arrest.
The Club explained that Dr. Abu Safiya’s case is one of thousands of detainees from Gaza who face the crime of enforced disappearance.
Despite clear evidence of Dr. Abu Safiya’s arrest on December 27, 2024, the occupation authorities have denied their previous statements and the existence of evidence such as videos and photos that were published, as well as testimonies from released detainees.
The organization "Doctors for Human Rights" filed a request on behalf of Dr. Abu Safiya’s family on January 2 to facilitate a lawyer’s visit to him. However, the occupation army responded by claiming there is no record of his arrest. In light of this response, the organization submitted an urgent petition to uncover his whereabouts.
Dr. Abu Safiya is one of at least 320 medical professionals who have been detained since the start of the genocide war. The arrest of doctors and the destruction of hospitals have been a deliberate strategy of this war. Among the martyrs who were detained during this war are three doctors from Gaza: Iyad Al-Rantisi, Adnan Al-Barsh, and Ziad Al-Dalu.
In this context, the Palestinian Prisoners' Club holds the occupation fully responsible for the fate of Dr. Abu Safiya and reiterates its call for the international human rights system to salvage what remains of its credibility in the face of genocide. Despite some decisions and positions from the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court that offered a glimmer of hope, they have yet to effectively halt the genocide, including the crimes of torture against detainees.
