Arab Prisoners

The National Committee for Jordanian Prisoners and Missing Persons in Israeli Detention has revealed a document presented by the Israeli Prison Administration to Palestinian prisoners holding Jordanian citizenship. This document outlines an agreement to deport them to Jordan to complete their sentences.

So far, four out of 16 Jordanian prisoners have agreed to this offer, some of whom were serving high sentences, while others had life sentences. Among them is Abdullah Al-Barghouti, who had the highest sentence. His brother, Ra'if Al-Barghouti, disclosed that the Jordanian Foreign Ministry had warned them that Israel's offer might be deceptive, especially if a prisoner exchange deal were to take place between the Gaza resistance and the Israeli occupation. The warning was that Abdullah Al-Barghouti might be excluded from such an exchange due to an existing agreement for him to complete his sentence in Jordan.

The Israeli intelligence officer responsible for the case of Abdullah Al-Barghouti had previously stated, "If Israel is forced to leave its territories for any reason, under any circumstances, it will take Abdullah Al-Barghouti with it because he poses a threat wherever he may be found."

This document initially presented to Jordanian prisoners in 2019 but not seriously considered at the time, has now been reintroduced for discussion and signing by the prisoners both inside and outside the Israeli prisons. Mazen Mlaisah, the head of the Jordanian Detainees and Missing Persons Committee, stated that the document addresses the humanitarian needs of the prisoners, especially since most of them have spent more than 20 years in Israeli detention and have lost contact with their families.

However, some prisoners are concerned about the timing of the deal, as it comes more than seven years after the capture of several resistance fighters in Gaza, leading to stalled negotiations. Moreover, there is uncertainty regarding Israel's true intentions behind the offer.

Khader Al-Mashayekh, a researcher on prisoner affairs, confirmed reports circulating about the Israeli offer to Jordanian prisoners. He noted that several families of these prisoners had been informed by their sons in prison about this "strange and sudden" offer. Among those who were approached with the offer was Abdullah Al-Barghouti, although there is no confirmation yet on whether he has agreed to it.

Abdul Fattah, the father of Jordanian prisoner Mohammed Al-Musleh, stated that his son had informed them of his signing on to the document, which discussed transferring him to Jordan to complete his sentence in case the Kingdom refused to receive him.

Wajdi Al-Rimawi, the brother of Jordanian prisoner Mohammed Al-Rimawi, said that his brother had communicated with the family and informed them that the prison administration had presented him with the option of completing his sentence in Jordan.

It is important to note that this offer was initially presented by the Israeli Prison Administration to Jordanian prisoners in 2020 but was met with rejection at the time. The recent reintroduction of the offer has led to discussions among the prisoners, particularly Abdullah Al-Barghouti and Munir Marou, with the possibility of extending it to other Jordanian prisoners.
