Fact Sheet on Palestinian Detainees and Prisoners in Israeli Prisons

General Statistics:

  • 9,844 total number of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons as of September 1, 2024. This figure does not include thousands of Gaza detainees held in camps under continued enforced disappearance.
  • Since October 7, the number of arrests in the West Bank has reached 10,700 as of September 12, 2024.
  • The Israeli Prison Service and the Ministry of National Security announced in April 2024 that the capacity for Palestinian detainees is 14,500, but the actual number of detainees exceeds 21,000.

Administrative Detainees:

  • 3,323 administrative detainees, including 25 women (among them 4 journalists and a breastfeeding mother), at least 41 children, and 24 journalists.
  • 8,872 cases of administrative detention since October 7, including both new and renewed orders.

Pretrial Detainees:

  • 2,848 pretrial detainees awaiting court procedures as of September 1, 2024.

Sentenced Prisoners:

  • 2,061 prisoners serving sentences as of September 1, 2024.

Forcibly Disappeared:

  • 3,600 Palestinians forcibly disappeared as of September 1, 2024.

Unlawful Combatants:

  • 1,612 Gaza detainees classified by Israel as "unlawful combatants."
  • The Al Mezan Center for Human Rights estimated the number of unlawful combatants to be 2,350 as of September 3, 2024.

Child Detainees:

  • 290 children under 18 years old, including 94 children in Megiddo Prison (24 from Gaza), and 40 held under administrative detention.
  • 730 cases of child arrests from the West Bank since October 7.

Life Sentences:

  • 578 prisoners are serving life sentences, with the longest being Abdullah Barghouti, serving 67 life sentences, followed by Ibrahim Hamed with 54.

Female Prisoners:

  • 96 female prisoners, including a pregnant woman named Jihad Dar Nakhlah, and 24 women held under administrative detention.
  • Six journalists, two lawyers, students, teachers, and other female detainees are included.

Pre-Oslo Prisoners:

  • 21 prisoners detained since before the Oslo Accords, with the longest-held being Mohammed Al-Tous from Jab’a, detained since 1985.

Sick Prisoners:

  • 700 sick prisoners in Israeli prisons.

Prisoner Martyrs:

  • 261 prisoners have died in custody since 1967, with 24 deaths since October 7, 2023.

Journalists in Prison:

  • 57 journalists, including 6 female journalists.
  • 104 journalists have been arrested since October 7, 2023, with some released.

Gaza Detainees:

  • 2,650 Gaza detainees, including 12 children and 2 women. Of these, around 300 are facing trials, while 2,350 are classified as "unlawful combatants."
