Ramallah, Palestine – Former Palestinian political prisoner 26-year-old Naeem Rasheed Dababat was hospitalized and underwent a surgery just hours after his release from Israel’s Megiddo prison yesterday evening.

Dababat, who hails from Tubas in the northern occupied West Bank, was subject to severe beatings and physical assault by Israeli occupation forces until the last second before his release. He was transferred to the Turkish Hospital in Tubas where scans showed he sustained fractures to his ribs, which affected his lungs and required surgical intervention.

He was released yesterday after 22 months in the occupation’s prisons with this being his first arrest. Prior to be detained, he did not have any health issues according to his family.

The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society holds the Israeli occupation fully responsible for the fate of Dababat, and for the dozens of Palestinian political prisoners killed by occupation forces behind bars since the genocide. Hundreds more have suffered breakages and fractures to their ribs and other body parts due to systematic lethal beatings. Some of these prisoners were freed during the most recent prisoner exchange deal, with many of them requiring hospitalization after their release.
